The Dress

This beautiful silk wedding dress is a bespoke, custom-made 1920’s Art Deco - inspired design, handmade by designer Kula Tsurdiu. The brief to Kula was for simplicity and elegance, yet with a hint of Great Gatsby-era glamour and glitz - she didn’t disappoint! I felt a million dollars in this dress, and it was perfect for our 1920s vintage themed wedding.

The dress is made from symmetrical panels of crepe silk cut on the bias. It is lined with the same silk which enables the dress to hang beautifully from the hips and flow with movement. The dress has a luxurious, slinky feel. The skirt is shaped so that it just skimmed my shoes at the front and trailed a little at the back. There are ribbons underneath the skirt so that it can be bustled for dancing.

In homage to the Art Deco theme, the bodice has been hand-embroidered with clear beads using silver thread in a stylised “fountain” pattern.

The dress has been carefully stored in a cover bag (hanging) since being dry cleaned after our wedding. There are some slight scuff marks on the lower part of the skirt that are almost impossible to see (only evident from underneath) and a couple of rust-marks on the inside of the lining from the hook and eye (at the top of the zip) and one of the safety pins sewn in the shoulder strap to hold my body-suit – these can only be seen on the inside. The beading is perfectly intact.

I have recently tried on the dress very briefly to get the body measurements. There is a small amount of space around the bust and of course the dress could be taken in or shortened by a skilled seamstress, however there isn’t enough fabric for it to be let out. I am happy for the dress to be tried on before buying.
